Apple supports the Exchange ActiveSync protocol, but Google has disabled Exchange ActiveSync support. Google still supports push Email using IMAP_Idle, but Apple does not support IMAP_Idle on iOS and never has. One could argue that Exchange ActiveSync is a more robust protocol for push Email, but IMAP_Idle does the job too. Really, the issue is that neither Apple nor Google supports the protocol that the other prefers.
