Okay, this is a weird one. I've confirmed that my credentials are good by successfully logging on to
www.nfbnewslineonline.org and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Next step I'll try is pairing my BrailleNote with the 5S, launching Newsline and logging in without the keypad, if that's possible. If that works I'm a happy camper. If not, well then, I'll have to contact Newsline support and see what they say. For now, I'm stumped. I definitely didn't have this issue when I set up the app on my old iPhone 4 and older version of IOS, so I don't understand what's going on here.
