Ray, if you are traveling abroad, having Data Roaming turned on will allow your phone to search for networks other than your home one. If a connection is made, you could incur some very high costs. Turning on Airplane Mode before you leave your home area is good advice if you want to makesure you are not charged for phone or Internet use abroad. In this scenario, your phone's time will not update to the time of the country you are in. When you get home, it's a good idea to make sure no international charges have not slipped in.
