I am in the messages app. I am sliding my finger but VO just reads a few
words.

How are you reading your text messages? Are you in the Messages app and
swiping to the right to read your messages? Is voiceOver just reading a
few words and then stopping or is it getting interrupted with something?
BTW, if you're talking about text messages showing up in the lock screen
then longer messages wouldn't finish being read before the phone locked
again. this was true in IOS 6 and I'm still seeing this in IOS 7.
