Hi Sieghard,

The insurance I have on my apartment would cover the iPhone but I have a
$500 deductible because, when I had a $250 deductible with full replacement
value, it was costing me an arm and a leg. Even if I wanted to put the
iPhone on my apartment insurance, it would cover theft but it wouldn't cover
loss, accidental drop or water or snow damage. In the country where you
live, the snow is fluffy and white. In a big city like mine, the snow is
full of salt, black and very slushy. You drop your phone in that and chances
are its finished. A friend of mine ruined one when he got out of a taxi
last winter and his phone fell on the ground in that slush.

Another reason why I bought the insurance from Bell is that you can cancel
it at any time but you can't purchase it later. It has to be purchased with
the phone. If I get brave, I could cancel in a few months after the Winter
but I don't think so.

Ron,

When I obtained my first iPhone last year, I went back to the Apple store
where I bought it and checked out their cases. The Apple store had several
leather cases that came across as sophisticated and functional. They would
fit inside a suit jacket perfectly without leaving a bulge or being so heavy
the case makes the jacket hang awkwardly as the heavy duty cases do. I'm so
glad you found a case that offers the protection from a drop, shows off the
5s elegance and gives the protection you need.

I too bought a private insurance plan. Rob at Today in iOS has said
repeatedly that Apple Care does not include water damage. Now that I am
insured until 2016, I have thought a little bit about the issue.
As a blind person, I have become mindful about the proper care and use of
the tools I use for my independence. When I was without a computer for a
few days when I spilled a glass of water on the keyboard, I learned a lesson
to be careful and to set up systems for handling liquids around electronic
devices. I avoid taking the iPhone into a bathroom or kitchen. I also put
it into a sealed Ziploc bag if I am
going to be around a swimming pool, beach, or in a small boat. I
learned the last idea from the guys who carry their firearm everywhere down
here in the states. The problem is with wet hands or small splashes that
can really do damage rather than having the item dunked in water.
