Blind square is a great app. For knowing where you are, I think it
works much better than the sendero app at this point. Combine that with
google maps and you pretty much have all the GPS bases covered.

Google Maps and MapQuest are also free apps worth trying. There are also
paid apps (such as Navigon) and an app from Seeing Eye with some
additional features especially useful for the blind pedestrian which may
better meet your needs. You can read reviews on applevis.com for more
information. What's best depends on what you're looking for.

This depends on what you want from the app. Nearby POI information? Turn
by turn directions? Just an idea of where you are? You can try Apple's
built-in maps app, or Google Maps, for navigation. Blindsquare is, I
hear, a good choice for POI exploration and is best in an area you
already know, or when paired with another navigation app (it can run in
the background).
