I have noticed that, if you pause before dictating punctuation, such as considering whether to end your thought there or not, the word will be inserted, rather than the symbol. It really does force you to think before you speak.

Until I updated to iOS 7.03 last night, I always said "period" when ending a sentence when dictating. Today, I noticed, (luckily before sending a message) that the word "period" was there instead of the symbol. This was rather annoying, until I surmised that perhaps I should say "full stop" - which I know is what it is called outside of the U.S. by most. That did indeed work . . . and I concluded this was happening because I always use the Australian or Irish English voices. But, as a test, I switched to U.S. English - and it is still the case. Now I am trying to get myself in the habit of saying "full stop" and it is proving difficult. HTH if any other Americans have been stymied by this.
