I had the same issue. Doing a search via the app store tries to charge you $4.99 per app.

I was finally able to grab them by going under the featured tab in the app store, then keep going quite a ways down until you find a button for Apps made by Apple. Once you tap on that you will get the list of all their apps where you will find the iWorks suite and iPhoto and iMovie shown as free downloads.
