On your home screen, try doing a two-finger flick up to get VO talking (even if
you cannot hear it). Now, press the volume up button several times rapidly. If
VO is on and running, this will cause VO's dedicated volume to increase. This
very thing happened to me last year because a third-party app turned my VO
volume to 0 whenever I ran the app, and I did not know it. I thought my iPhone
had broken. But, because it was working properly, I could not get the computer
recovery to activate. I was in the process of finding a way to completely
restore the iPhone without first entering my password (which cannot actually be
done without going to an Apple Store), when I thought about plugging in
headphones and hearing VO on the headset. I used it this way for a week before
I remembered that each volume is tracked separately by iOS. In other words,
when headphones are plugged in, this will not effect speaker volume. When using
bluetooth, this volume will not effect speaker volume.
