Hi Don, It is not required unless you want to update the software on your Jambox or do things like change the announcement you get when you turn it on. Keep in mind that doing this most likely will require sighted help, I haven't been on their website lately, but the update process used to be quite inaccessible. As for 32 bit or 64 bit, you should download whatever version matches your version of Windows. If you have 64 Bit Windows and there is a 64 Bit version of the software you should use it.
