I'm not aware of a setting. This is just the default behavior, and I'm not sure you can change it. There are ways to force the deletion of messages from the Gmail server, but I've never used them before. I'd suggest going to Google to search. There's a lot of information out there on how Gmail works, and the Gmail help pages are pretty good, although a bit terse at times.

Hi Chris,
Is there a setting that you can turn on to make Google delete the email after
30 days? And where would this be found?

To get rid of my messages, I just move them into the Trash folder and wait
about 30 days for Google to delete them. If they're left anywhere else, they'll
stick around forever.

Hi,
So if I understand you correct, I can move each message let's say to the trash,
and it will still be there in the all-male folder? How about when I delete all
of the trash content, will that still be there in the all-male folder as well?
In other words, you're saying that The only way to get rid of the message is to
delete it from you all mail folder?

Hi, with gmail, the All Mail folder is where the real messages are actually
kept. So, other things like inbox, important, or other so-called folders you
create are actually labels which most other email programs see as folders. So,
bottom line, if you delete things from All Mail, you are deleting the real
McCoy.

Hi all,
I have gMail on my 4S as my email client, no app just set up through gMail. I
moved some emails from my inbox to my important folder, but see them also in my
all Mail folder… My question is, when I go to delete my trash folder, or sent
folder, will this delete the messages that I want to keep? Which folder should
I keep these messages in that I would like to store?
Thanks.
