Hello Jen and all: The keystroke that may assist you is option command s. that toggle will make that list appear and disappear.
As for the challenge with your iphone syncing but not really, look in the device portion of the table you made reappear with the previously mentioned keystroke. if you find a listing for your iphone that is not really there, perform a command E to eject the device. then try closing itunes. If there is no listing of a phone in the device area, simply try closing itunes. it should not cause any problem. Hopefully this information proves useful to you. Please let us know.
