Craig, I would first discourage you from choosing a single earpiece. Just my experience, but the times you need it, in loud and unfamiliar environments, it is more important than ever to have clear communication the first time. This is true if you are looking up information, receiving directions or talking by phone. I find I can hear the outside sounds just as well and better use my phone with decent stereo. My choice there is the Plantronics 903 for about $40 on Amazon.
Just my opinion re: the M-50, it has a permanent ear hook. The M-55 does not have this hook attached, but does come with one you can use when you need. I use it when I am alone and if I drop the earpiece it would be difficult to find. But, if I am with others and they might help find the dropped earpiece, I will not use it (or around the house). Not that the earpiece falling out of my ear is a huge problem; it fits quite nicely and is very small and lightweight. Yes, I do occasionally use the single earpiece. But, my first choice most all the time is the 903. The biggest problem I have had with all bluetooth, and I have had many, many different devices, is the microphone. This is not such an issue talking, but when using Seri or dictation it does matter a lot, and most fail that test. The Plantronics M-50 and M-55 do pass that test with flying colors, though. Just one final point re: the M-55, it comes with some service for weather, news, etc. This is free for one year and around $20 per year after. It is not worth free. It calls a "Call Me" type service, but the voice is horrible and the service is extremely slow. It is not something you would even know is there if you choose not to use it, even if you want to try it for a bit to see how bad it is. I just feel that the optional ear hook on the M-55 makes it a better fit for my needs. I think they are pretty equal in performance. I think there is a $10 difference, with the M-50 being less. But, if you were buying just one device, I highly suggest you reconsider the stereo models.
