We just restored an earlier backup.  We tried tens of times to no avail, and 
finally gave up and restored a backup we saved for such an emergency.

Hi Chris, iMessage activation sends a hidden text message to a phone number, 
and requires a reply from that number. If, after a few attempts to turn 
iMessage off and back on again, it's still not working, contact your carrier 
for assistance.
