Just as an additional note. The Emoji icons are not composed of punctuation symbols as the older style emoticons were.

I've sent some to family members without iPhones, and they didn't see the included symbols. Remember to double tap the English U.S. keyboard when finished putting in the symbols you want, otherwise your emoticons will appear whenever the virtual keyboard is active.
