Its not more than the twice of the size of the iPhone in thickness and add about two centimeter in width. As long as a battery has either a built-in 30-PIN or Lightning connector or a port where you use the standard Apple 30-PIN or Lightning cable and as long as said battery provides standard USB current it should work just fine. When a dock had issues I don't think it was because of the version of iOS on the device, but had more to do with the PIN configuration which I think was different for the iPhone 3G/3GS and Third Gen iPod than that of later devices. I have one dock which always said it would not support charging my iPhone 4 and 4S, but it always did charge it anyways. This should definitely not be an issue with any external battery you buy these days. If it says it can charge an iPhone 4S or 5 it will definitely charge an iPhone 5S, 5C and also any iPod Touch.
