I would point out that text messaging is by far used more then iMessaging so if your into texting heavily, get a package that offers texting or unlimited texting.

I just changed my plan with AT&T. We were on a plan that gave us unlimited talk and text plus 2 GB of data usage for under 2 hundred bucks. When we bought our iPad Air, I wanted to just add them to our plan. Couldn't do it. The plan didn't permit sharing data between devices so the kid search and found us a better plan. We get unlimited talk and text just as before except now added to that is 15 GB worth of data that can be shared between all our devices. Most of the time we are at home and we just go through my home router so the shared 15 GB would only be used when we can't get WI-FI. My wife's company offers a discount on the bill as well so in the end with all the incentives it worked out to be the same price as what we were paying. It was like loosing a dime and finding a quarter!

Alan

iMessages work between Apple devices and go over the network through
Apple servers. SMS are text messages between cell phones going through
your cell phone providers servers.

SMS will cut into your text messaging limit. You need to have a cellular
connection. You can only send text messages between phone numbers.

iMessages will only work between Apple devices. You don't need a phone
number. It won't use text messaging limits but will use either cellular
data or will work over wifi.

I did a google search for iMessage versus SMS, and I came up with

Go to Settings, swipe down to messages and make sure send and SMS
messages is turned on. This will allow you to send and receive SMS when
iMessage isn't available.

Hi,
I have an iPhone 4s and have unlimited text messenging but very little
cellular data.
The other day I was out and a friend sent me an iMessage. I didn’t
get this since I was not at home on wifi all day and have my data
turned off.
My question is how can I ensure that I get all messages from contacts
when I am out somewhere? I know iMessages use data or wifi so how can
I have them set as normal text messages. I have an iPod touch as well
so want to be able to have people be able to contact via email as well.
Please help since I don’t want to miss receiving messsages.
