Hi, my iPhone 5 does well at picking up people from across the room. But if yours does not do what you want it to do, try placing on a table pointing toward the person who is speaking with nothing taller than the depth of the phone between you and that person. The table will act as a reflecter and may mean that you can pick up sounds from greater distances. One down side to this is that the microphone will become more omni directional, so that if there is a lot of other noise in the room, you may pick that up as well.
