Hi, my iPhone 5 does well at picking up people from across the room. But if
yours does not do what you want it to do, try placing on a table pointing
toward the person who is speaking with nothing taller than the depth of the
phone between you and that person. The table will act as a reflecter and may
mean that you can pick up sounds from greater distances. One down side to
this is that the microphone will become more omni directional, so that if
there is a lot of other noise in the room, you may pick that up as well.

I use Rev Voice Recorder as you described in your message. It picks up very
well from across the room and allows me to pause and resume recording when a
doctor or nurse leaves the room and comes back in.

I have a few recording apps, but I am wondering if there is an inexpensive
microphone for recording. Normally, I am only interested in recording
conversation, such as doctor appointments and the like. But, it doesn't seem
the built-in mic records much beyond the person nearest the device.

Since this is just for personal use and not a frequent need, I don't want to
invest much. Any pointers to microphones or suggestions to improve what I
have will be most appreciated.

Eric
