Hi Fanus,

Here is some basic physics:

Devices draw a certain current which is measured in Amps.
Adapters are rated to operate at a certain power (Watts) and deliver a
certain voltage (Volts).
The calculation goes like this: Power (W) = Current (Amps) times Voltage
(V).
So, if you had Apple's full-size universal adapter which is rated to operate
at 12 Watts maximum and to deliver 5 Volts DC (direct current), you can now
take the amount of current iDevices use and figure out the values.

The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Mini all draw 1 Amp. The adapter delivers 5
Volts hence 1 Amp times 5 Volts = 5 Watts.
The full-size iPad draws 2.4 Amps hence 2.4 times 5 Volts = 12 Watts.
This means you can use the adapter from a full-size iPad to charge an iPhone
or iPad Mini, it will simply use only 5 Watts of the 12 Watts the adapter is
capable of.
You can also use a 5 Watt adapter to charge the full size iPad, but it will
charge very slowly. It is, however, not unsafe to do that.

Here is a link to the Apple Store where a number of charging devices and
adapters are listed. these also include 30-Pin to Lightning, Battery Cases
and so on, but the 3 primary chargers Apple sells are on that page:

The 12 Watt adapter which is the one which comes with any full-size iPad and
which is compatible also with iPhones, iPad Mini and iPod Touch
The 5 Watt adapter which comes with any iPhone 5S, 5C, 5, 4S and 4, iPad
Mini and iPod Touch (not recommended for full-size iPad)
Lastly, the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit includes a 12 Watt adapter, a
30-pin to USB cable, and a set of six AC plugs with prongs that fit
different electrical outlets around the world. Interestingly enough Apple
has not yet released a World Travel Adapter Kit with a USB to Lightning
Cable, this way people who buy the kit and are now fully invested in newer
devices with Lightning ports and who want an extra Lightning cable get a
useless 30 Pin cable and have to buy another cable separately. I guess we
know why Apple has now 158 Billion Dollars in cash! Here is the link to that
page:

Subject: iDevice chargers

Hello list
I notice that the charger of the iPhone 5S looks exactly like that of the 4S
while the charger of the new iPad mini looks like the charger of the iPhone
3GS and the first iPad.
I am just curious whether these chargers are interchangeable because I
remember something about the iPhone 3gS charger should not be used to charge
the iPad 1.
Regards
Fanus
