Keep in mind that as of iOS 7 one does not have to use video with Facetime, it is possible to make an audio call only. I certainly don't always want people to see me and if you are using cellular data or have a slow WiFi connection as it often is the case in hotels or a public WiFi, Facetime Audio is preferable as it uses less bandwidth.
