I don't know about your iPod but I had this issue with an iPad I am helping a friend to learn to use. It turned out we had to go into Settings to iMessage and sign in with her Apple ID there after making sure messaging was turned on; in my friend's case, she didn't end up having to enter her password but she did have to tap on the Apple ID under messaes in Settings.
