I haven't really had this problem. I had it someone with my iPod Touch 4, but never with the 5. You might first try closing it in the app switcher and trying it. If that doesn't work, you might try shutting down and restarting your phone. Sometimes strange problems can creep in if the device has been running awhile without a reboot.
