Hi

The problem that I'm having is the iPhone locking even though I'm interacting
with the screen while using the handwriting feature.

I don't use handwriting often. Here are the gestures that work for me

1 Trace the letter on the screen. Voiceover will announce the number of apps
that begin with that letter.
2 Swipe up with 2 fingers to advance through the list of apps that begin with
the letter you chose to search.
3 If there are no apps that begin with the letter that you wrote or to go on to
a ddifferent letter search, a 2 finger from right to left, voiceover should
announce the previous letter searched, swipe from left to right to enter the
next letter you desire to do a search for apps.
