Like with most types of apps you can find more than one in a category to do what you want. Different people prefer different apps which do the same thing. As far as these go I've had different levels of success with both apps depending on what I am trying to scan. For some reason Text Detective wants the phone turned to landscape mode. Turn it so that the home button is to the left. First choose the scan button. Then place the phone around 6 to 8 inches above the page you want to scan. Someone else can probably better speak to the placement than I have since I haven't used the app as much as I should. Once placed where you want it, double tap the start button which is the farthest on the right. The app will tell you if it was able to scan an image and when it is finished. Flick to the right till you hear the results of the scan. I would also suggest listening to the tips tab to get some better ideas on how to use the app.
