Contact syncing would still work, but I'm pretty sure Downcast file copying 
wouldn't. I would suggest that rather than turning off iCloud backup, one of 
you delete your iCloud account and create a new one using a different email 
address. This can and probably should be an iCloud address, and you'll be 
walked through the process of creating one. That way, you'll have 5 GB of your 
own for backup and can have separate contacts, documents, notes, etc. from your 
wife. You can still share an Apple ID for purchases from the iTunes store.
