Graham,

These instructions are for iTunes 11.1 for Windows but I assume the Mac
iTunes has similar capability.

1. Open iTunes and go to Preferences. In Windows iTunes, you can hotkey to
it by pressing ctrl + a comma.
2. The first tab on the dialog which opens is General and it contains an
Import Settings button which can be opened by pressing alt + o in the
Windows world.
3. The first drop-down box is Import Using and should be set to AAC encoder.
4. The next drop-down is the Setting option for the quality of the recording
and I'd recommend iTunes Plus or you could customize the settings to get a
higher quality.
5. List the mp3 files you'd like to convert by searching for them.
6. If you're wanting to convert them to m4r which is the ringtone or alert
tone format, you'll need to limit the length to 40 seconds or 5 seconds,
respectively. I'm not going to detail how to do this since you didn't ask
about it in your post.
7. Highlight the mp3 song you'd like to convert from the list and from the
context menu, select Create AAC version.
8. The converted song should be listed immediately below the source song in
the list.
9. Find the song using the Mac file manager and rename it from its m4a name
to an m4r name.
10. When you highlight the renamed m4r song and execute it, it should be
added to your iTunes library and placed in the Ringtones or Tones folder.

I apologize if any of the above instructions aren't accurate for the Mac
world but since I've never used a Mac, I don't know how the instructions
might vary.

Good luck.

Subject: Comverting a mp3 to an m4r file

Hi,

Using my Macbook Pro running ML, how do I convert a mp3 file to m4r?
Can it be done in iTunes or will I need an audio editing program to do this.

Thanks for any help received.

Regards

Graham
