Jennie, It sounds like while you are feeling for the numbers, you are going to high on the screen above the numbers and covering the area near the speaker therefore activating the sensor. Try using only one finger and moving up the screen from the bottom while searching for the numbers. This might prevent the loss of speakerphone during that time.
