I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about, but once you've started playing a file using dropbox, pause it and activate the button which says "add to favorites". I haven't done this on my phone, but I've done it in the past when I had an iPod touch and the tracks were actually saved on the device. They weren't saved for access by other media apps, but they still played in dropbox even while I was offline.
