Hello Tom, I use the Gmail app but to answer your question I don't think there's a way to make it remember your place. However within the Gmail app if you get the checkboxes I believe if you've selected everything you should be able to hit a delete button down below. So what I would do, would be to use the native mail app on the iPhone in order to remember your place.
