One good way of having to return to the home screen, or to go to app
switcher without having to click the physical home key would be to
activate the assistive touch feature. Once you do that, it will add an
icon to all screens, including those inside applications to enable you
to use the soft home key button instead of the physical home key. I
have it enabled on my iPhone. This way I do not have to worry much
about having to ruin the physical home key due to excessive use.
To enable the assistive touch go to /settings/general/accessibility and
turn assistive touch on.
