I saw this on a LinkedIn forum and thought I'd repost it below. This was
from a list for users of the iPad but I think the content is very
relevant to this list.
Shhh. Don't tell my wife Carrie, but I have been playing at work today.
If she finds out I'm playing and not working, I could be in trouble.
What am I playing with today? Well those of you who know me, know that I
like to simplify things...You know, find easier ways to do things in
less time.
That said, the more hands free I can make my iOS devices, the happier I
am. So, I started playing around with Siri and the iOS email app on my
iPhone to see what it could do for me.
Well most of you know that when you ask Siri to email a contact in your
address book, Siri will prompt you with questions (like - what is the
email subject and message?, and would you want to send it?) to build and
send the email. All this being hands free (accept for holding down the
home button to summon Siri).
If you didn't know that tip...consider it a bonus tip for this edition! ;-)
But what about emails received. I wondered whether Siri could actually
fetch and read my emails for me. So, as I said previously, I played
around and this is what I found out Siri can do...
1. Find out whether you have any new email messages
*To find out whether you have any new email messages, ask Siri: "Do I
have new email messages?", "How many unread emails do I have?" or "Show
me my new email messages"
*To find new emails from just today, ask Siri: "How many new (or unread)
emails do I have today?" You can also ask Siri how many new emails you
have on a specific date.
2. Find out whether you received any email messages on a specific date
*To find out whether you received email messages on a specific date, ask
Siri: "Did I receive any emails on April 30th?"
3. Find out whether you received any email messages on a specific day
*To find out whether you received email messages on a specific day, ask
Siri: "Did I receive any emails on Monday?"
*Siri displays emails from the previous Monday
4. Find email messages from a specific sender
*To find out whether you received new email messages from a specific
sender, ask Siri: "Are there any new emails from [sender name]?"
5. Find all "new" email messages from a specific sender
*To find out whether you received "new" email messages on a specific
sender, ask Siri: "Did I receive any new emails [sender name]"
6. Find email messages from a more than one sender
*To find out whether you received email messages from more than one
sender, ask Siri: "Did I receive any emails from [sender name 1] and
[sender name 2]"
7. Read my new email messages
*To have Siri read you a summary of your new or unread email messages,
ask Siri: "Read my new emails."
*Note - Siri stated how many new emails messages I had and then told me
who the sender, date and subject of the three most recent email
messages. Then, Siri asked me whether I wanted it to read me the rest of
the new emails.
8. Read my latest email message
*To have Siri read you the date, sender, subject, and entire email
message of your latest email message, ask Siri: "Read my latest email
message."
*Note: Get this, after Siri read the full message to me, it ask me if I
would like to reply. If you say yes, she will then ask you for your
reply and whether you want to send the reply. How cool is that?!?!
9. Read my latest email message from a specific sender
*To have Siri read you the date, sender, subject, and entire email
message of the latest email message from a specific sender, ask Siri:
"Read my latest emails message from [sender]."
*Siri read the full message to me, it ask me if I would like to reply.
10. Send message to contact and carbon copy contact
*OK...I threw in one "send" message tip that I discovered today...To
have Siri send a message to a contact and carbon copy another contact,
Tell Siri: "Send email to [first contact] and carbon copy [second contact]."
*Siri will then ask you for the message subject, message, and whether
you want to send it.
I did come up unsuccessful when I asked Siri to, "Email the last photo I
took." Instead of creating an email with the last photo I took, Siri
rather created an email with the subject "The last photo I took" but no
attachment. I also struck out when I asked Siri for the last email I
sent. Siri notified me that it can only search the inbox.
I would imagine that these ideas and many more will be an featured as
Siri continues to mature.
Hope you learned something today...if you did, pat yourself on the back
and go show off to your family, friends, and coworkers. You deserve it!
