Mine only says time by default, but one flick to the write gets me date like - *day, ## of Month.
After that is the slide to unlock feature. The key is, I have to go flick to get at the date at all. I have an iPhone 5s as my personal phone and an iPhone 5 for work and neither one says the date. I figure I know what the date is and never thought of it only saying the time as an issue.
