Hello and thank you all for your recommendations.  They were very helpful.

After experimenting with several free websites and free iOS apps, as I was
not willing to buy the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary for 24.99 USD,
the most consistent and easiest to use cross-platform collegiate dictionary
that displays each syllable of a word, (accessible via VoiceOver) is a free
site called 
"iWord.com"  located at www.iword.com which, as it turns out, is developed
by Merriam-Webster.
