Itunes and iCloud work together. iTunes plays music and will let you sync some things to your computer. icloud is a server that will let you sync to it. It is online. You can put encrypted backups of iPod onto your computer. You can also put backups on iCloud, but they won't be encrypted. This means that if you use iCloud to restore your phone, you'll have to reenter some passwords.
As for contacts, I'm not sure if you can back those up onto your computer anymore with iTunes. Yu can with iCloud, though.
