No, VDR cannot read protected books. Books from Amazon, Nook, iBooks, and others cannot be read in any app other than the one made by that company.
The odd sound you're hearing is probably the sound as the page scrolls. Muting your device can help, though you will still hear the pause where the sound normally plays.
