Hello Vicki,

This is Mark.

I have never used an Air Printer so cannot advise you in that regard.

However, I can tell you that there are many printers that are accessible via
iOS and OSX that will allow a totally blind person to have access to the
printers ink levels, device status, number of pages printed, etc.
Personally, I recommend that you purchase a printer, not a printer/scanner
combo.

1.
Make sure you have a network router setup and running. I personally like
Linksys but many of my friends use Apple's Airport Extreme.

2.
Purchase a Ethernet/Network Laser printer such as the Samsung ML-331. The
cost of the average network laser printer, monochrome is about 80 USD. If
you want a color laser printer, you can pay in the range of 160 USD and up.
I purchased my Samsung ML-331 (monochrome) laser printer last year for 45
USD, bran new from Frye's Electronics.

3.
The reason I suggest a network laser printer is because the printer will be
assigned its own IP address on your home network. This means that, once the
printer is successfully connected, you only need to browse to its IP address
in Safari, or any browser for that matter, and you will have access to the
printer's settings, statistics, and controls.

4.
Connect the network printer to your router via an Ethernet cable.

5.
The Mac will see the printer and download the correct drivers. For your iOS
device, you will simply install an app that can see the printer on your
network thus allowing you to print to it.

Vicki, please keep in mind that the list above are the broad strokes needed
to get you up and running. There are a lot of good Ethernet/network laser
printers out there that will work on your Mac and iOS device so do some
shopping around. I strongly suggest that you go out and actually touch the
printers before making a purchase as size and shape can make a difference.

For example, in my case, I like to address my own envelopes so I made sure
that the printer I purchased had an envelope slot that I can use without
sighted assistance.

Good Luck and Happy Printing,

mark

Subject: Purchasing air printer to use with iPhone and mac air

Hello everyone.

Feel free to write me off list as some of this information relates to
the mac air.

In April I bought a mac air, which I love, and need to purchase a new
printer--one that I would like to use with the iPhone and mac air. The
driver for the printer that I have, hp lazar 1020, is not supported in
mavericks and I was trying to use it from the US B port and it is not an air
printer. Apple has confirmed that the driver is not supported as well.
Here are my questions:

Can anyone recommend a printer to get which can be set up by a totally blind
person and will the mac just recognize the drivers?

I have seen so many printers with touch screen menus and would like to avoid
this or will the mac configure it without me having to use these menus?

Many printers also work as scanners and is it worth getting a printer only
or one that serves as a scanner? I will need to purchase scanningsoftware
for the mac in time.

i also want to get a printer that will work with the iPhone and mac air and
one which, hopefully, will still be supported when future operating systems
are released for the mac and iPhone.

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated and my email address
is [email protected]

Vicki
