Hi, Generally I see this sort of behavior if I'm on a very slow connection. If your connection is reasonably fast, try restarting your phone. Or if the problem is with a particular message, you might want to check mail once on your computer so the message can be dealt with there.
Also, go to Settings and choose Mail, Contact, Calendars. Be sure Load Remote Images is off. That would decrease what needs to be loaded, and I've also heard it can help fight spam because downloading those remote images in messages from spammers can be an indication to them that someone has read the message.
