Very easy to do a playlist.

1. Click File menu, New and New Playlist. Give it a name.
2. In your listing of songs find the first song you want to add, right click
it or use Application key, then from the menu select "Add to Playlist" (the
shortcut key is "A", you have to press it twice to find "Add to Playlist"
3. From your list of playlists select the one you want to add the song to
and press enter, that's it.

You can also select a song or multiple songs and then right click and select
"New Playlist from Selection", shortcut for this is Control+Shift+N. I guess
in a way this allows you to skip the first step above because even if you
are just using one song to start a new playlist, you can just go to that
song, press Control+Shift+N, name the playlist and press OK and the playlist
is created and the song is added. To add more songs just use Add to Playlist
and select the playlist you just crated.

Hi Ray,

I don't think you can. Easiest way to do this I found was to put these songs
into a playlist and
then sync that playlist.

Hi Ray,

I should have mentioned that what I described for copying and deleting
photos only applies to photos
in the camera roll. For me a dialogue pops up as soon as I plug in my iPhone
is there are pictures
in the Camera Roll, e.g. it pops up just as it would if I plugged in a USB
stick. This is controlled
in the auto play options in Windows.

If you have photos in other albums which were synced using iTunes then you
either have to go to the
Photos app and delete them one by one or do what you do with music. Connect
your phone, find it
under devices and then tab until you find the checkbox "Sync Photos From".
If it is checked just
uncheck it and Apply or Sync. If it is not checked then you should be able
to find your iPhone under
"Computer (shortcut is Windows Key+E). For me it shows up under Portable
Devices as "Sieghard's
iPhone". If it's not there try and take a picture and check again.

Photos are easy. Just plug your phone into the computer, go to "Computer"
and find your phone. It will show up as a drive just like a USB stick and
you can copy photos to
your computer with just the standard Windows commands
Control+C for copy and Control+V for paste. If youw ant to copy all of
Control+them
use Control+A first to select all, then copy and paste.
If you want to delete all photos after copying them just select them all
again and press delete.
It's no different in this case than deleting photos or files off a USB
stick.

Ray,

As for the file that wasn't found, try playing it in iTunes in the music
library. It's possible that
maybe something was changed in the name or the location of that song. As I
said before, the song
listings in iTunes are basically like shortcuts which point to the actual
song. If you change the
song's name or its location the link gets broken, iTunes will indicate this
and Jaws will read
something like "Invalid". You would have to go to "Add File to Library" in
the File menu, find that
file by browsing to the folder where it is located and add it again to the
library.

As for removing content, what is it you want to remove? Is it music? If so
you might be best off by
unchecking "Sync Music" and then press Apply or Sync and remove all music.
Then check on your iPhone
under Settings, General, About to see if any music is left, if so you can
delete it there.
Once your phone is cleared check the "Sync Music" again, then check "Synce
selected playlists,
artists and genres" and reslect all the music you want and resync it.

Ray,

Well, I am not sure what you are doing then because if you correctly do all
I described it will
work. By the way, MP3 is fine, no need to convert to AAC. Sorry I can't help
further, but without
being able to trouble shoot on your computer and your phone it is difficult
to tell you what's
wrong.
I think "KISS" is subjective, I find the process quite simply and straight
forward and I am very
happy Apple maintains the security of their devices by not allowing every
Joe Dick and Harry access
to the file system and hence I definitely wouldn't call them stupid.

Subject: RE: music on the IPhone

Hi Ray,

First of all it is important that your music shows up in your iTunes music
library. I think the
easiest way to do this is that you put all your music together into one
folder. Of course you can
use subfolders for artist and album and, if you like, you can use Genre as
well. For example, I
prefer to have my music in the music folder which is a subfolder of the
iTunes Media folder which in
turn is a subfolder of the iTunes folder. If you are familiar with how
folder paths work, in Windows
7 the default location is as follows (I am assuming your Windows user name
is "Ray":

C:\users\ray\music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music

I don't use Genre folders here since all the music in this folder is managed
by iTunes and iTunes
uses the associated ID3 tags to know which artist belongs to which genre,
which song belongs to
which artist and album etc.
You can, however, make folders for "Alternative", "Classical", "Country",
"Pop", "Rock" etc. if you
wish.

OK, so now in this folder I have folders for all the artists I have music
from. If I have more than
one CD by a particular artist I then have subfolders for each album and the
songs are in these
folders. For example, I have a subfolder in the above Music folder for
artists such as Dire Straits,
Eagles, Queen, Supertramp etc. In my Dire Straits folder I have further
subfolder for the albums I
have like "Brothers in Arms", Love Over Gold"
etc. In my Eagles subfolder I have subfolders for "Greatest Hits", "When
Hell Freezes Over" etc. I
think you get the idea.

OK, now to iTunes:

Open iTunes and select "Add Folder to Library" from the File menu. A
standard Open In Windows
dialogue appears, browse to the Music folder by going to "My Music, then
iTunes, then iTunes Media
and then find Music.
Tab to "Select" and activate it, this will add all the music you have in the
Music folder including
that in all subfolders to your iTunes music library.
If you add more albums or songs you have to repeat this step.

You can now check that you are in Music (if you use Windows Control+1 will
do the trick" and I would
highly recommend that you make sure the "Songs"
radio button is checked and not "artists" or "Albums" or one of the other
ones. This will allow you
to enable the column browser. You can do this from the View menu or you can
use Control+Shift+B for
"Browser" to do so.
If the column browser is active it allows you to nicely browse your music in
iTunes by genre, artist
and album. For example, if you select "Rock" from the drop-down list of
genres and then tab a few
times until you are in the songs list view, you see only the songs which
belong to the genre Rock.
If you select "Dire Straits" from the artist drop-down list you would only
see all the songs by Dire
Straits and if you select "Brothers in Arms" from the album drop-down iew
only the 10 songs from
that album would show. It works great, is super accessible with Jaws and a
very nice way if you want
to play music from iTunes.

OK, now to the part of getting the music to your iPhone:

Make sure your phone is connected to your computer with the USB cable.
Find your phone in Devices and tab until you get to all the radio buttons
like "Summary", "Info",
"Apps", "Tones", "Music" etc.
When you find the music radio button press the spacebar to check it.
Now tab some more until you come to a checkbox which says "Sync Music" and
make sure it is checked.
Now tab 3 or 4 more times, 3 times will put you on a radio button which is
read as "Sync entire
music library" and if you want to sync everything you have in your music
library then simply check
it, tab a bunch of times until you get to "Apply" or "Sync" and press enter
or the space bar. The
sync will start and depending on how much music you have it could take a
while. You can press F6 and
it should take you to where you can check the progress of your sync, you may
have to tab once after
pressing F6. I have about 3,000 songs on my iPhone (about 20 Gb) and that
takes I believe 20 or 25
minutes to sync over.
If you have too much music and you only want a selection on your iPhone,
then check the next radio
button which is called "Sync selected playlists, artists and genres".
After you check it you have drop-down list views for Playlists (if you have
any), for "Genre",
"Artist" and "Album. This allows you to, for example, sync all music from
the genre "Rock", but I
usually prefer to sync by artist. I tab until I get to where Jaws says
"Artists Treeview" and here I
can now use the down arrow to go through the listing of all artists and
simply use the spacebar to
check the ones I want. When I am done I tab to "Apply" or "Sync" and press
enter and the sync
starts.
Note that sometimes it says "Apply" and sometimes "Sync", it doesn't matter
what it says as long as
you activate it.

That's about it, it's a pretty simply and very accessible process, let me
know if this works for
you.

Regards,
Sieghard

Some months ago I indicated that I could not get music to the phone. I
could get it to the media
folder but it did not transfer to the phone. What might I have been doing
wrong? Also is it
necessary to convert the MP3 files to M4A if so how does one make that
happen? Or, am I just out in
left field here?
