I personally make sure my iPhone is plugged in to the charger before I go to
bed but as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men etc! I have a
1800mAh battery that's slightly smaller then a deck of playing cards. I
have an extra sync/data cable and I rolled it up like you would a hose
outdoors into about a 2 inch circle held together with a couple of old bread
twist ties. I left enough cable on both ends to span the distance between
my phone and the charger. The 2 items fit nicely together in my pocket side
by side.I use a Plantronics Legend ear peace in my left ear so I need not
take my phone out of my pocket and nobody knows I'm also charging my phone.

For us men, seeking ideas to discretely use the external battery pack? I
originally thought of in one pants pocket reserved for the pack, snd the
other pocket for the phone, but upon my family's observation that having the
cable that runs from the battery pack to the phone, across my middle, looks
weird, how do you guys manage when using the battery pack, not look weird?
Maybe put battery pack and IPhond in the same pocket? Thanks xor tips!
