I know we say this all the time, but have you looked at Voice Dream Reader? It 
offers a dyslexia font, word highlighting, custom colors, and more. I'm not 
familiar with what someone might need who is new to reading, but I have heard 
that VDR is popular with not only blind people, but those with learning 
disabilities as well. There is a free trial, which will do everything the full 
one does except play audio for longer than a few seconds.
