There was a pretty good explanation posted to this list not long after Prizmo 2
came out.

In short, if you use the quick capture, you can get a very good OCR on a page
very quickly and you don’t have to go through a lot of hoops.

If you use the create a document method, it is a bit more involved, but it is
great for making documents you can save, even multi-page documents.

For me, it does as good a job as the KNFB reader on the Nokia N82. It does
take a fair amount of patience to get through the steps, but it isn’t too bad
once you’ve done it a few times.

If I can’t find the step-by-step post from before, I’ll see if I can’t create
one.

Hang in there with it.

Richard

Subject: RE: Specialty OCR Apps

In order to try to make a knowledgeable decision about OCR apps I went out and
bought Prizmo for $9.95 to see how it compares with the KNFB product. Maybe I’m
not very bright but I find the Prizmo app very confusing and not at all
intuitive. I have gotten a couple of scans out of it but I’m not sure exactly
how it is supposed to work. There seems to be no help for basic functions that
I can find. Does anyone know where to get some basic instructions for Prizmo?
Thanks.

Karl

Now since I do not have a braille display myself, I can not say whether or not
apps like text grabber or prizmo work good with a braille display, but it has
been stated that the KNFB Reader will work with a braille display.

I personally think that they are hoping the reputation of their previous KNFB
Reader will help sale the app, but for me, it will just simply be how the app
performs versus the already existing apps.

Hi Everyone,

I have been following the thread about the KNFB app. I have no problem with
their pricing. People will either buy it or they won’t. So, this is not a
slam of the company at all. My question is what is the advantage of a
specialty OCR app like this? I frequently use Prizmo and have no problem with
it. I occasionally take pictures of documents for OCR and I very frequently
use it to recognize PDFs that people E-mail to me that have no text. I even
once used it to OCR a picture that was sent to me in a text. What can you do
with KNFB Reader that you can’t do with something like Prizmo or Text Grabber?
Like most blind people, I do sometimes have issues when taking pictures free
hand for OCR because of everything not being lined up quite right but that is
going to be an issue regardless of the OCR package that is being used. If you
only have half the document in the shot then there is nothing that the app can
do to compensate for that. Please understand, I am not trying to bad mouth the
app or the company but I truly don’t understand what the advantage is supposed
to be.

Thanks,

Scott Duck
