Kellie, I really like my JBL Flip Wireless Bluetooth Speaker (Black). It is at the upper end of your friend's price range with the price at $97 for the first supplier listed at Amazon. They also list a couple of other vendors selling it for about $94, all with free shipping.
This unit has great sound and is about the size of a can of soda but a little bit longer. It can be placed either horizontally or standing on end like a can of soda.
