In some respects yes, especially if you are being notified about every email, Facebook post, news updates etc.
You will have to go to Settings, swipe down to Notification Center and open and turn off all of the app alerts that you do not want to receive immediate notifications from. I have phone, messages, calendar, reminders and skype alert notifications turned on. I have my screen brightness set to 30%, in case I need a sighted persons help. I have bluetooth turned off until I need to use it. And I have background app refresh turned off. Doing all of this has greatly increased the battery life on my iPhone 5. Of course, your settings for your device depends on how much info you want pushed to you immediately and what you can adjust as needed.
