How expensive the peripherals are is entirely up to you, though. My monitor is just an old one we had sitting around, and I've seen monitors well below $100 if you have to buy one new. A keyboard is as low as $12 from Wal-Mart or similar locations, and you don't need a trackpad at all. They're nice, and run about $60 if you want one. The official Apple wireless keyboard is also $60, so you could spend $800 total on the low-end Mini (assuming an eighty-dollar monitor and no speakers), but you could also get away with $650, conceivably.
