I think your piling way to much on yourself needlessly. Forget Jaws. This has nothing what so ever to do with Jaws, Window Eyes NVDA or what ever. Just relax and try to think of it as learning a new way.

Your index finger just became your mouse and it's better then anything Microsoft ever thought up. <grin> What ever is under your index finger is where the mouse pointer is. Instead of learning screen reader commands like with Jaws or Window Eyes, you can see everything on the screen with your index finger.

For example, on the screen may be some things on the left side of the screen and some other things on the right side of the screen. There may be columns as well. To view a column, just slide your index finger down or up the column to read what's there where as a screen reader in Windows just reads left to right and top to bottom. Then you had to press other keys on the keyboard to learn to make sense of it.

Your index finger and voice over are your eyes. You can view the screen as easily as a sighted person.

Don't make it any harder on yourself then it needs to be. Most everybody learns their way around their iPhone and asking questions is what it's all about. We all are here because somebody along the way answered our questions too.

So, fire away with those questions and soon it will be you helping the next new person who gets their first iPhone.

Regards,

Alan

Yes, voiceover gestures are where you tap the screen, flick up or down, etc. and voiceover commands are where you hold down the vo keys and then other keys on the keyboard. If you are not a JAWS user, it can be difficult to get familiar with using the keyboard for commands and learning basic gestures such as taps and flicks is a much easier way to navigate the screen. I imagine that many JAWS users can easily transform to learning Voiceover commands as they are used to navigating the keyboard with commands, but as a non JAWS user, it is a lot to learn.

Is it possible to perform basic functions such as reading email and downloading books from BARD and Bookshare by using only voiceover gestures and no voiceover commands or do you need to memorize some voiceover commands to perform these basic activities? Michelle
