Actually, when you write characters on the display, the current word is shown without contractions. You can check this by routing the cursor to a different word and finding the question mark displayed correctly. The dots 1-4-5-6 you encounter is the computer Braille code for the expanded grade 1 question mark.
You can type a new line with dot-8-space.
