Does your friend have change with buttons turned on in settings? It's
possible then that she accidently turned it down.

Subject: Friend has problem with home button
I have a friend who is blind and has a new 5C. At first siri worked when she
held down the phone button but now when she holds down the home button the
phone locks. I can’t find any setting that should make the phone lock by the
home button: unlock or at least the first step in unlocking, yes, but lock
via the home button? Not that I can find. I’m wondering if the home button
is broken or if there is a setting I don’t know about. I haven’t had her go
as far as holding down the home button and power button to reset yet. The
home button works normally when pressed; this abnormal behavior only occurs
when she holds it in to try to get siri.
