You probably need a minimum of 2.5 or maybe even 3 Gb. The iOS 8 Beta 5 IPSW
file is 1.85 Gb.
I think, however, that if you were to upgrade via iTunes less space would be
required since a my understanding a lot of the work of expanding files and
so on would be done on the computer.
In my opinion a major update like this is better done via iTunes anyways
since you get a lot more feedback as to the status of the installation.

I am also a firm believer in the steps which Rob from the Today in iOS
Podcast always recommends before any update of iOS. These steps are:

1. Connect your phone to the computer, transfer purchases, then sync, then
do a backup or even better an encrypted backup.
2. Force quit all apps from the app switcher.
3. Go to Settings, General, Reset and select "Reset Network Settings". This
will reset all radios to the default and reboot your phone.
Keep in mind that this will require you to reenter your WiFi password once
the phone reboots so make sure you know it.
4. Now do the update whether you do it via iTunes or over the air from
Settings, General, Software updates.

The backup is of course just common sense and while quitting all apps and
doing a reset all network settings is not maybe officially recommended, it
definitely won't hurt and I think those of us who do that run into less
problems.

Also keep in mind that if you want to be among the first to do the update on
the day when it is released you may experience very slow download rates and
possibly time-outs or errors when the installation is trying to validate
with Apple servers. That is why I think it is especially important to
upgrade via iTunes if you want to upgrade right away because at least you
have a way to see what is going on which is not the case if you do the
update on the phone. At some point Voiceover goes dead and I have heard that
during the first wave of updates this could last an hour or more which means
you have no way to know if the process is on track or if there was a
problem.

Of course you will also have to put up with any bugs present in iOS 8.0 so
unless you are willing to put up with that I suggest you wait a few days at
least at which point there will be information available on Applevis.com and
from the Viphone list as to which bugs are present in the final release and
how annoying they are.
I think I am not breaking my NDA if I say that Beta 5 has some nasty or
maybe I should say annoying ones. I was really hoping there would have been
a Beta 6 and that there was improvement but Beta 6 was only released to
carriers and all the other Beta testers won't know until the Goldmaster
release on Tuesday or Wednesday what has been fixed in those final weeks.

Sieghard

Subject: Size of IOS Files

I am preparing my phone for IOS 8. Generally, how much free space should I
have available to install the upgrade correctly? I haven't a clue how much
space previous upgrades have taken. I know we don't have an exact size, I am
just looking for an approximate.

Thank you in advance,

Lynda
