If the past is any indication, you just install the update. Your settings and 
data stay put, and the only change is the new iOS version. Of course, you 
should always do a full backup before any update, just in case something goes 
wrong, but most times nothing bad happens. No one has yet updated to 
iOS8,obviously, but I see no reason it won't be like the last few major 
releases.
