how does direct typing differ from touch typing?

Hi Jonathan,

My husband and I were discussing this topic at length this evening, and he
pointed out something I
had long since forgotten. Many, if not most sighted people don't even look at
their keyboard when
they are typing on the iPhone. Whether they realize it or not, they are
actually watching the
output of what they are typing on the screen, but are in fact, typing purely by
muscle memory and
familiarity of the keyboard with their fingers or thumbs. I have a sighted
friend and neighbor who,
I swear, has to set some sort of speed record with her ability to type quickly
on the iPhone. She
most definitely isn't watching what she is typing, and the "clicking" sound
that accompanies each
keystroke simply can't keep up with her movement. LOL Having had usable vision
once myself, I know
exactly what he is talking about, because I have been "touch typing" now since
I was in the third
grade or so. I have longed for a way to type as sighted folks do on my
iDevices, not so much
because I just have an overwhelming desire to "be" like the sighted, but
because I honestly believe
I could type more quickly and efficiently that way. Even on the iPhone, which
doesn't have nearly
as much space in which to position either or both hands, I can make good use of
the direct typing
function with one or two fingers at a time. It's just like anything else, it
comes with a learning
curve, and as always, it's not for everyone. Personally, I have no use for
inputting text via a
virtual braille keyboard, as I just can't get used to scrunching my fingers
into such a small place,
and I really do prefer tactile buttons pressing underneath my fingers, but I
think the concept is
cool and I am glad there are folks who can make use to it. :-) As for me and
braille input, I'll
stick to the braille display.

Hi Jenny, I agree with you. Direct touch typing absolutely rocks on an iPad,
and when I first
started using this feature three months ago, I couldn't imagine using it on my
phone. Now I am
starting to, and I suspect it will be used even more regularly when I get my 6
Plus. But there's
definitely a knack to it and it may take a while to learn.

Direct typing is a great reason to have a SpeedDots screen protector. It really
helps and the
combination can speed you way up.

Actually, you might be surprised. What's useless for one may be the next best
thing for another.
Personally, I am rather excited about the direct touch typing feature. While I
made quite a few
mistakes within the first three or four minutes of playing with it, my speed
and accuracy picked up
dramatically within the hour. For those whom muscle memory and spacial
orientation come more
naturally, it's a pretty neat option. But it's just that, an option, and
personally, I applaud
Apple for giving us more of them. :-)

Useless on an iPhone as far as I am concerned. You basically have to hit the
letter right on and it
takes an actual tap and lift for the letter to type rather than just lifting
your finger.

Hey guys,
I got ios8 installed, however, touch typing doesn't seem to work any
more. Worse yet, it doesn't appear to be in my roter. Any idea where
it might be hiding?
